We don’t really know how often Jean-Vincent Luccini has been asked for the reasons to christen himself Sarah Goldfarb, a name chosen in honor of that old lady on speed from the congenial movie “Requiem for a dream”. What we do know, however, is that the producer from Marseille loves puns, genredefying credentials and synthetic sounds with lots of thrust.

DJ Bootsie, Hungarian turntablist par excellence to release “Holidays In The Shade” album on BBE

Few DJs are able to draw from the rich history of their own people, but that’s exactly what Bootsie and his cohorts do, incorporating uniquely somber Hungarian folk music motifs into their acoustically rich electronic tunes, while simultaneously maintaining a hip hop sensibility. The result is a gorgeous musical soundscape that gets you moving, emotionally and physically.

Following on from their focuses on other genres over the years (House – Masters Of Work, Techno – Laurent Garnier & Carl Craig, etc), BBE Records have lined up the next in their Kings of…series. It’s Drum & Bass this time, with those classy mofos 4Hero and DJ Marky mixing a disc apiece.

Former Fridge man/Four Tet principal Kieran Hebden hasn’t exactly been idle since the release of the last new Four Tet full-length; besides putting out the “Remixes” collection, he’s collaborated with everyone from soundtrack composer David Arnold to dubstep doyen Burial, released a DJ-Kicks mix, and done a ton of stuff in his ongoing side project with free-jazz drummer Steve.

Gaining both critical acclaim for its catchiness as much as for its atmosphere, the mutant strain of 140 bpm (or thereabouts) bass music currently infiltrating the global airwaves has morphed consistently over its recent life span; cross pollinating its acres of influences into the bundles of sub genres it now houses. It’s become a strain of club music that revels in biting back against the perceptions of those outside of the core scene, those who consider dubstep to simply be a swelteringly tough warbling bassline that’s complimented by a half step drum pattern and some airy atmospherics.

Pantha du Prince to release new album “Black Noise” on Rough Trade Records, 8th of Febuary 2010

There are many theories about the origins of music. One such theory maintains that the first song was a lullaby for children; another, that men began to make music in order to please the women. Hendrik Weber a.k.a. Pantha du Prince does not worry about such genealogies. For music is always already there, even without humans. On his new album, the producer and DJ, who lives in Berlin and Paris, claims: music slumbers in all matter; any sound, even silence, is already music. The mission, then, must be to render audible what is unheard and unheard of: black noise, a frequency that is inaudible to man.

Fabric’s half-tonne mix is curated by Martyn – the tracklisting and artwork have been revealed

Martijn Deijkers’ particular strand of bass defies genres or adjectives – to his fans and admirers, it’s known simply as ‘Martyn Music.’ With a sound that became a cornerstone for dubstep in 2009, and a debut album (‘Great Lengths’) that became one of the most stylistically fierce long players the scene has produced to date, Martyn pushes a rebellious, out-of-the-box mentality into his every artistic venture. Commanding dancefloors with a strong sense of timing and attitude, his music revels in its relative simplicity – synth lines lounging atop swung drum patterns, all in turn massaged by warm low frequencies – a trait he’s reinforced with fabric 50, his first mix CD to date.

Monolake release new album entitled “Silence”, just short of the project’s 15th anniversary.

Founded in 1995 by Robert Henke and Gerhard Behles, Monolake quickly stood out from their peers, drawing influence not only from minimal techno and drum ‘n bass but also the “sonic richness and sophistication of academic computer music”. Their first releases were on the Basic Channel-affiliated Chain Reaction label, and since then they’ve become a hugely respected and influential fixture in the electronic music firmament, releasing several classic albums including Hongkong (1997) and Polygon Cities (2005) and becoming renowned for their distinctive installation and live performance work.
